Markets in Mallorca provide the ideal place to purchase some original Mallorcan products. In these picturesque, colourful and multi-ethnologic places you'll find nearly everything, from basic food produce to the ultimate fashion trend, all in a familiar relaxed atmosphere.

Most markets on the island are held in the morning from around 8:00 to 13:00, so you'll need to get there early and be prepared to haggle like a professional to secure the best bargains.

Among the many remaining historic buildings on Pollensa Old town is a former Jesuit convent, which is now still used as the local Town Hall, and it is here that the Sunday morning market is held each week. There are almost 300 stalls, where one can find a selection of fruit and vegetables, souvenirs, shoes, clothes and plants.

A further market is then held at Puerto Pollensa every Wednesday, next to the church of the Virgen del Carmen. This market only started in 1986 with around 50 or 60 stalls where one could buy fruit and vegetables to all kinds of clothes, souvenirs, shoes and other foods. Nowadays there are almost 200 stalls, with many more souvenirs, food, gifts, clothes, shoes, plants, fruits and vegetables and typical produce from the island.

If you have access to a car, or fancy a half day organised excursion, the biggest and most famous weekly market on Mallorca is held every Thursday morning around the streets of Inca. Although also selling a wide selection of other goods, Inca market is most famous for its leather goods, so expect to find a wide selection of leather shoes, bags and jackets.

If you really are in need of some retail therapy, additional markets are also held twice a week at nearby Alcudia old town on Tuesday and Sunday mornings, offering a selection of fruit and vegetables, shoes, clothes, souvenirs, leather, hippy products, hair plaits, traditional Mallorcan doughnuts, jewellery, bed linen, small animals and a whole lot more. The market spreads out through the old town, inside the walls and near the Roman City of Pollentia.

On market days, there's also a bus service linking Puerto Alcudia with Alcudia centre, running every 15 minutes or so. However, if you don't fancy the queue, there's also taxi and horse and carriage services available too.

During the summer months, a slightly smaller market also takes place every Friday from 8:30 to 1:30 at Puerto Alcudia, but since the same traders attend both events, the variety of goods for sale is somewhat limited.
